Desert R.A.T.S. (Race Across The Sand)
Desert RATS Kokopelli 150
Multi-Day Footrace Adventure
Fruita, CO to Moab, UT
June 17-23, 2018

Unique beauty, amazing wildlife and profound solitude – all the elements of true adventure – reward racers willing to brave the strenuous Desert RATS journey. Vast landscape and ancient obstacles combine to create the rugged and stunning beauty of the Kokopelli Trail. Desert RATS is more than just a race. It is not only a journey through true backcountry desert but within yourself. While some will race, most are there to test their mental and physical limits. Don’t expect to set personal records for the distance you’ll cover; you will need to pace yourself for the heat and terrain. You must have patience and grit in order to not be fighting your own frustration. The race is about the experience, pushing yourself and making friends along the way.

At Desert RATS, the adventure is the goal. It’s about reaching deep within yourself, adapting to adversity and overcoming the challenges in front of you. Those who enjoy Desert RATS the most come into the experience prepared and willing to be flexible in every way.

FATHER’S DAY 5K – YOU’RE MY HERO
Join us for our fifth annual FATHER’S DAY 5K virtual race! It’s time to celebrate your father the HERO! We will also be donating at least 15% of each registration to Team Hoyt, which works to build the individual character, confidence and self-esteem of America’s disabled and physically challenged young people through inclusion in all facets of daily life. In the spring of 1977, Rick Hoyt told his father, Dick Hoyt, that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.”

Wahsatch Steeplechase
The Wahsatch Steeplechase was conceived by McKay Edwards in 1979.

There were originally three courses all starting in Memory Grove Park.

The 8 mile Twin Peaks Derby (Avenues Twin Peaks, site of the 2002 Olympic Rings)

The 15.5. mile Black Mountain Classic

The 26.2 mile Wahsatch Crest Marathon which climbed over Lookout Peak and descended to City Creek Pass and down City Creek Canyon back to Memory Grove.

Today the Wahsatch Steeplechase is a tough 17 mile course that winds up the Shoreline trail above the city, past Twin Peaks to the Limestone Crags of Black Mountain.

Descends the east ridge from the summit to Smugglers Gap. A mountain pass that was named because of a group of moonshiners that operated a still in City Creek Canyon during prohibition and smuggled moonshine to the military base at Fort Douglas. From there the course descends the single track Smuggles Gap trail to City Creek Canyon, down City Creek Canyon back to the start at Memory Grove.

START/PACKETS

Start time is 6:00 a.m.

There are no packets. Pick up your race number between 5:00 a.m. and 5:59 a.m., the morning of the race. T-shirts and prizes will be distributed following the race.

AID STATION

There are 4 aid stations supplied with water, an electrolyte (Gnarly) drink, snacks, and gels (Honey Stinger). You must carry a bottle or bladder during the race to refill at the aid stations. By carrying your own drinking container, we will minimize cup waste. There are long stretches with no shade; you will need to hydrate. I recommend that you carry your own preferred gels, electrolyte capsules, and any other supplements and food that keep you running.

PARKING

Park on upper East Capitol Blvd., east of the State Capitol. You may also park in the public lot at the Capitol building. Walk east, down the stairs or trail, to Memory Grove Park.

CAMPING

There isn't any camping within walking distance of the start. The closest camping is the Salt Lake City KOA, 1400 West North Temple.

HOTELS

There are many hotels in the downtown area a short distance from Memory Grove Park. Google Hotels Near Utah State Capitol for a list.

11th Annual Operation Smile 5K
*** NO SHIRTS ARE GUARANTEED AFTER JUNE 4, 2018***
The 11th Annual Operation Smile 5K Fun Run is thrilled to announce this year's event to be held on June 23, 2018.
Every year, over 200,000 children are born with a cleft lip and cleft palate. This makes it difficult for these children to eat, speak, or smile. Operation Smile is an organization dedicated to performing life-changing surgeries to repair these cleft lips and palates for children who couldn't otherwise afford the surgery. All proceeds from this event will benefit Operation Smile. For more information about this amazing organization, please visit www.operationsmile.org. All registrations include a shirt (guaranteed before June 4th) and a ticket into a drawing for some amazing prizes. There will be some refreshments as well.
The 5K Fun Run/Walk will begin at 8:00 am at Jensen Nature Park in Syracuse, UT. The starting line is a short walk from the finish line. The route loops around the park, and is a paved trail race with few inclines that makes it perfect for all levels of runners and walkers. Strollers are also welcome! Please be mindful of other runners as at times the trail can be narrow. You do not have to register children who are in strollers unless you would like them to have a t-shirt and a ticket in the raffle.
This is a timed race, but is considered a fun run. Times will be posted on the website at www.operationsmilerun.com on the afternoon of the race.
Medals will be awarded to 1st-3rd for both male and female runners. 1st male and female will receive an additional prize.
There are no age group prizes.
The One Mile Walk begins at 8:00 am at the finish line. This route follows the perimeter of the park's pond, and ends at the finish line. Children in strollers are welcome, but do not need to be registered unless you would like a shirt and ticket into the drawing for them. Children who are participating in the Kids' K are also welcome to join their family on the walk at no additional cost.
The Carter Jay McMerrick Memorial Kids' K (for kids 12 and under) will begin at approximately 9:00 am immediately following the 5K run. This will begin and end at the finish line. Kids will run approximately 0.5 km, then come back to the finish line. Parents are welcome to run with their kids, or push them in strollers. Registration includes a shirt, medal, and small prize.

Call's Fort Triathlon
Call's Fort Sprint Triathlon and Pancake Breakfast:
The 750-meter, open-water swim is in a shallow (5' to 6' deep) waterski lake. No waves, usually warm enough to not need a wetsuit, and you can stand up at almost any spot to rest if you need to. The 20 Km bike ride is an out-and-back on country roads with light traffic. The run segment is at the lake on a groomed dirt/sand track. A quick dive back into the lake when you're finished is a refreshing way to conclude your triathlon. Then enjoy some post-event refreshments, including a pancake breakfast! There will also be a mini-triathlon for the youngsters following the Sprint.
